Speaking your truth feels a bit Oprah-esque doesn’t it? You gather your courage and energy and, against all odds, fighting the naysayers and internal demons, you shout out your vision. It lands on the wall, like just cooked spaghetti and when the dust settles, you look to see what you have.

It’s out there, you think.img_1231

And then it’s time to go to work.

I have to clarify something, if during the course of this week’s 100-day journey work, you think, I’ve got this handled. I have spoken my truth. Everyone knows. I’m good.

Speaking your truth is not an event. It’s a state of mind.

In other words, you’ll never arrive.

Why? Well, because your truth, which I see as an outgrowth of your purpose, is an unfolding. The more you see, speak, and act on the deepest part of your best self, the more it will come to life in your daily reality.

So if you are still lost, I have put together a small primer— four things you should remember as you speak your truth.

  • You must speak your truth to your loved ones every day.

I can always tell when you aren’t speaking your truth to your family. You have put img_1032yourself in the number one position of your life if no one else needs you. You never say no when you have a deadline but your daughter needs you. You try to get everything done when no one is around and if someone is inconvenienced, you feel terrible. You might be out there with everyone else in the world, but when someone you love interrupts you, or fights with you over the resources of time, money or attention, you struggle to say, “This is my life. I’m important. I need this.”

Speaking your truth is not selfish. But it is necessary in order for people to actively love you. If you are consistent and back your words with focused action, they will understand.

  • You must feel a bit afraid sometimes when you speak your truth.

If you are feeling smugly satisfied right now, this point is for you. You are outspoken. 2You have learned to set boundaries and be authentic and transparent in your community. There isn’t anything NOT to know. Congratulations my friend, you have passed through one of the most challenging barriers on the way to your best life: being real. But speaking your truth doesn’t stop there. If your visions don’t make you feel uncomfortable, provoking that question: “who do you think you are?”, go back to the drawing board. Living “out loud” is partly for you, and in part to inspire your community. Through the unknown you grown and change. Your safety zone is important, but it’s not a strength builder. Like Noah and his ark, you speak the impossible and then you go do it. That’s where the magic happens.

  • Your truth should have an embedded request in it.

Imagine speaking into a deep and wide canyon of possibility. “Hello out there,” you 1say. “I want something impossible world! Can I have it?” From there humanity shows up and reveals the possibilities. They show you how much you want it, in spite of the un-likelihood. They come with ideas and resources. They arrive with love and energy. They stand as a beacon, ahead of you in the process, showing you what could be for you. They say yes. They say no. They sign up. They buy. They hook you up.

Are you self-contained? Are you comfortable speaking the truth as long as you don’t need to depend on anyone? Perhaps there is more truth to dig out.

  • Your truth must not arrive with a 2-second delay. Speak your truth in real time.

Ever since Janet Jackson surprised us with her “wardrobe malfunction” in Super Bowl XXXVIII, there have been small delays in “live” performances. Sometimes we treat our truth that way. We want everyone to know, but we want to know how it’s going to turn out first.

Here’s how it works: On the delay you say, “I lost 30 pounds and you want to learn more.” In real time, you say, “I am ready to lose 30 pounds right now. I’m afraid it’s going to be like every other time, but I want this!”

I get why you don’t speak it ahead of time. You could look stupid and you have failed before. Why invite the doubt into your space? But you must speak your truth with bravery and allow your universe to hold your feet to the fire.

Here is the big question—do you still have to speak your truth?

The answer is—yes. As long as you are on the earth and your purpose-driven best life is still unfolding. From where I’m standing, it still is!

Want more coaching? I’m here for you. Let’s take a 100-day journey together. It is time for you to speak and walk in your truth. Your universe awaits!
